The importance of a daily self care routine

It’s so easy to get drawn into this busy materialistic world we live in. So much so that we forget ourselves and also to keep life balanced and fulfilling. When our well being falls out of balance it’s usually because one area of life is dominating; such as work, family issues, health etc. Suddenly we find ourselves too busy, tired, distracted or agitated to attend to our values and as a result we suffer and can become stressed, anxious or depressed.

One way to prevent this from happening is to attend to our own personal care routine on a daily basis that honours our values. It doesn’t have to take long, it can be as quick as 5 minutes or longer if you have time on other days.

Take a moment to define your values, and then beside those values write what you can do to honour that on a daily basis.

For example, my values are:

  • Health
  • Spiritual growth
  • Connection
  • Love
  • Education
  • Helping others

So, every day I wake up and do yoga (health) I meditate (spiritual growth, connection) I send metta/loving kindness at the end of my meditation practice and end that with gratitude (love) I then make myself a healthy smoothie to start my day (health) I make a point to read something inspirational (maybe a quote or passage from a book) and learn something new (education). This takes about 30 minutes of my day, more if I have time.

You may think you don’t have time, but if you really value your values, then you should make time by getting up earlier or prioritising better. Depending on your values, you may have a totally different personal care practice, that’s totally your choice and shouldn’t be dictated by anyone else. You may even choose to break it down into little bite size chunks that you can do throughout the day. Whatever you choose to do, make it achievable and accessible so it fits in with your lifestyle and becomes a savoured practice, rather than a chore or a ‘tick box’ exercise. If you miss a day, RELAX, don’t beat yourself up about it, just rest and come back to it the next day with oodles more enthusiasm.

When you start the day the right way, everything else becomes a breeze and you set the mind with focus, discipline and a sense of achievement and positivity because you have taken the time to respect your values and to look after yourself. After all, you can’t give from an empty cup, so fill yourself up first then you’ll have something to give out to others.

I do my daily personal care practice because I want to help others. My gift to the world is to be an inspiration to others, so I do my practice with the intention of creating a ripple effect. My efforts and actions can be felt by the people I interact with in the day by the way I think, act and am. The insight cultivated from my practice is something I share in my teaching.

So when you are struggling to find the motivation or the discipline to do your daily practice, do it with the intention of helping others. To be an inspiration, to be more compassionate in your relationships, to have more patience for your work colleagues, better health for your children, more productive for your business or more understanding for your partner. That way, you will never miss a day
